TO BENEFIT marginalized workers in the film industry, golfing celebrities see action on June 23 to raise funds for the Movie Workers Welfare Foundation (Mowelfund) at the short Club Intramuros layout in Manila.

This marks the first time that Mowelfund, put up by former President and actor Joseph Estrada in 1974, will be organizing a golf tournament, dubbed the "Celebrity Golf Cup Invitational."

The most prominent names in entertainment, politics, sports and even in media have been invited as the Mowelfund aims to raise a significant amount of money to help in sustaining the privileges and benefits of its more than 4,500 members.

Former Senator Tito Sotto and actress Boots Anson-Roa head the organizing committee of the event which was launched yesterday.

The tournament, which will use the modified stableford format of scoring, is expected to be graced by such screen and television luminaries like Vic Sotto, Richard Gomez, Aga Muhlach and Ogie Alcasid, among others.

Sotto and Roa have invited former president Fidel V. Ramos to hit the ceremonial tee shot, with Philippine Tourism Authority general manager Robert Dean Barbers also invited to play.

The Mowelfund has been working on a tight budget since 2002, when its share in amusement tax charges in the Metro Manila Film Festival was cut to 30 percent from 50.

Not only do the members enjoy medical and hospitalization benefits amounting to P77,000 each per year, Mowelfund also provides aid in education needs of the children of its members.

Inquiries can be coursed through tel. nos. 727-1915, 727-1961 and 936-38-79 c/o Tere, Jacqui and May.
