TOO many distractions can lead to Manny’s destruction.
This was the observation made by Freddie Roach as the renowned trainer was busy fixing his travel documents in preparation for a flight back home to Los Angeles yesterday afternoon.
According to Joe Ramos, one of Pacquiao’s advisers in the US, getting a flight out of Manila for LAX was difficult even thought there were two flights on Sundays.
"Wala talaga eh," said Ramos, who was assigned to be with Roach the whole time the ace cornerman was in the country. "Freddie’s got first-class tickets, but the flights are all booked. Freddie didn’t care whether it was economy or business class. He just wanted to take the flight."
"I can’t stay for another day," said Roach, who left a gym buzzing with activity.
Roach is one of boxing’s most sought-after trainers and back at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, he trains a wide array of high-end and promising ones, including Filipinos Z Gorres, Czar Amonsot and the heavy-handed Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista.
Roach said he was able to talk with Pacquiao yesterday afternoon and the GenSan lefty did say goodbye to him unlike on Friday when Pacquiao just slipped out of Manila for Cebu without even telling Roach.
Pacquiao is booked to slug with Oscar Larios of Mexico on July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum and Roach said it would need at least six weeks to get Pacquiao ready.
"He told me (yesterday) that he will be there on May 13," said Roach.
Would that make him feel better? His answer did not sound convincing.
"Hopefully," Roach said when told that everything has apparently turned out well.
Roach said Pacquiao won’t be able to train well with him on the other side of the ocean.
"There’s just too many distractions here," said Roach, obviously referring to Pacquiao’s sponsorship deals, personal appearances, nocturnal activities as well as his circle of friends.
