SAN CARLOS CITY — Muntinlupa-Parañaque-Las Piñas crowned itself as the first national football girls Under-17 champion by pulling off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Iloilo before a big crowd Saturday at the SJRI pitch here.

Goals in each half by defender Rebecca Formoso and Jessica Ryon secured the victory for the MPL booters, who also got another inspiring performance from team captain Natasha Alquiros, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Alquiros provided the leadership but it was Ryon, the best midfielder of the tournament, who came through with the winning goal in the 46th minutes when her lob from 35 yards out was misjudged by Iloilo keeper Tena Roa.

Iloilo, a surprise finalist after beating favorite Davao, 4-1, in the semis, went ahead through Ma. Stellina Cataluña, whose 15th minute free kick from the right just outside the box slipped through the hands of MPL keeper Princess Trinidad and into the goal.

"Natasha (Alquiros) controlled the game. It was a team effort and I respect Iloilo because they played really well also," MPL coach Ernie Nierras said.

MPL Football Association President Cathy Revilla said their club is overwhelmed with the distinction as the first Under-17 champion.

Formoso, who was declared best defender, tied the game in the 30th minute when her left-footed shot from the right beat Roa.

Trinidad took the top goalkeeper plum, while Iloilo took the fair play award. Cataluña emerged the best striker with seven goals.

Earlier, Davao posted a 2-1 win over Negros Oriental to finish third in this tournament supported by Petron, Red Ribbon, 2Go and Sports Plus Channel of Solar Sports.
