ORIENTAL AND Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) superflyweight champion Z Gorres scored an emphatic 10-round decision victory over Pedro Rincon Miranda of Colombia yesterday at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California.
The 24-year-old southpaw Gorres dropped Miranda in rounds one, five and 10 to post identical 100-87 scores in the three judges’ cards in the fight promoted by Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) headed by Oscar dela Hoya.
Gorres sent Miranda crashing with a jab-straight combination in middle of the round. Few seconds later Miranda was tagged with a hook-straight combo.
"Akala ko hindi na tatayo. Pero matapang din talaga and siguro yung experience niya nakatulong din," said Gorres in an overseas telephone interview with the Bulletin.
Miranda, according to Gorres, was able to survive the fight by clinching for most part of the fight but the Cebuano boxer was still able to connect to secure the victory.
With the win, Gorres improved to 24-1-1 with 12 knockouts while Miranda, a late substitute, dropped to 31-11-2.
After the match, Gorres and Filipino trainer Edito Villamor watched the 12-round World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight title fight between reigning champion Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico and compatriot Alejandro Montiel, the current WBO superflyweight ruler.
Gorres and Villamor, along with their Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani, were hoping for a Montiel victory as the Mexican is expected to vacate the superflyweight throne should he hurdle Gonzales.
But Gonzales retained his crown with a dreary 12-round split verdict.
"Panalo talaga si Gonzalez pero tingin ko kung mabigyan kami ng chance kay Montiel may panalo si Gorres," disclosed Villamor.
In another title fight, Daniel Ponce De Leon kept his WBO superbantamweight crown via 2nd round destruction of Mexican Gerson Guerrero.
De Leon is being eyed by the handlers of Rey ‘Boom Boom’ Bautista in a possible 12-round world title fight within the year.
