KNN reporters undergo human rights advocacy training
spacer

We write, we shoot, we report – that is the world of the Kabataan News Network (KNN) youth reporters. Thanks to their partners, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Probe Media Foundation, KNN reporters are continuously trained to become responsible media practitioners. Recently, 39 youth reporters and 12 adult bureau managers had training at the Astoria Plaza Hotel, Ortigas Center, Pasig on human rights advocacy to equip them with the necessary knowhow in relaying sensitive topics.

Themed "Sensitizing Children and Youth in Human Rights: Appreciating the Humanity, and Rights of Others," the training is consistent with the vision that KNN was created to empower the Filipino youth to pursue their passions and use their talents to draw attention to a diverse range of issues that affect them and what they feel strongly about.

Grounded on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which gives great moral weight to the fundamental principle that all human beings should be treated equally and with respect, the training provides an educational and enjoyable way of promoting human rights through talks and workshops. With wisdom and ingenuity, the participants zealously took part in both individual and group activities, all leading to a better understanding of what becoming a human being means.

It’s equally assuring and refreshing to see these young children engage themselves in relevant issues without losing the touch of being young. They were vibrant during the workshops and discussions. Their zest for learning is very evident in their glassy eyes. Without doubt, seeing the world through the eyes of children will always be an interesting option for the society to consider.

Moreover, the seminar helps KNN in realizing a potent status of giving news reporting a fresher face, establishing the human side of every issue, may it be civil, political, economic, social, or cultural. With KNN reporters, vigilant as watchdogs, exposed to such trainings, the youthful push for institutional change is just around the bend.

KNN is a 30-minute tell-all, bare-all tele magazine program by the youth, for the youth. Catch KNN, hosted by Atom Araullo, Chiyomi Rances and Apple Fale, every Saturday, 3 p.m. at ABC Channel 5.
