Council identifies 127 eco-tourism sites in Caraga

BUTUAN CITY - To continuously lure local and foreign tourists, the regional eco-tourism council identified at least 127 eco-tourism destinations in the Caraga region.

Various stakeholders of the tourism industry organized themselves into the city and provinces tourism council to orchestrate efforts in identifying more eco-tourism destinations at various areas of the region.

Caraga region comprises the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur, and the cities of Surigao, Bislig and regions capital city of Butuan, where most tourist spots are located.

Local officials in mentioned areas, supported by the Department of Tourism (DoT) in Caraga have intensified efforts to upgrade their tourism services and facilities.

Regional eco-tourism chairperson Benjamin T. Tumaliuan, regional executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), identified some of the major eco-destinations in Caraga region namely: The acknowledged international surfing area and blue lagoon in General Luna, Dapa, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte; the century-old Bitaug tree in Magallanes, Surigao del Norte; the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur; the famous Sohoton cave in Bucas Grande, Socorro town, Surigao del Norte; the Buenavista cave in Surigao City; the Punta Kalabera (sculptured stone formation) in Catadman, and Zaragoza Rock formation Bitaugan magic whirlpool, also both located in Surigao City; the scenic Britania island in Salvacion, San Agustin town, in Surigao del Sur; the Tinuy-an falls in Bislig City; and the Jurassic Park in Carmen, Agusan del Norte.

Yearly, the municipal government in General Luna, Dapa town, with the full support of the provincial government and tourism council conducted local and international competition in surfing where participants are both domestic and foreign surfers.

The Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary which has an area of 19,196.558 hectares covering the municipalities of Loreto, Veruela, La Paz, Sta. Josefa, Talacogon and Bunawan, is also frequently visited by tourists.

Red Tumaliuan said that there are at least 22 eco-destination sites in Agusan del Norte, 70 in Agusan del Sur, 25 in Surigao del Norte and 10 in Surigao del Sur. These eco-destinations are closely developed by the local government units (LGUs), respective tourism councils and various stakeholders of the tourism industry, he said

These eco-destination sites can be reached anytime of the day and night through land trip, except in Siargao island where you have to travel more than an hour through sea crafts.
