June is ‘National Kidney Month’
spacer

The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) recently announced the activities to mark "National Kidney Month" – an annual event that promotes prevention and early management of Chronic Kidney Disease.

For the year 2005, around 6,100 Filipinos suffered from end-stage renal disease and are undergoing dialysis. The NKTI has always advocated early detection and prevention of kidney failure as vital, as is the need to ensure that acute cases avoid, if possible, the progression to chronic kidney disease.

Every June of each year, NKTI leads the whole nation in celebrating the National Kidney Month, Organ Donation Awareness Month and Prostate Health Month.

With this year’s theme "Medical globalization…… Tugon sa makabagong panahon," the event will focus on the different services for renal and other related diseases and how it can be at par with international standards.

Certain activities have been lined-up to highlight the occasion, which will be done in various parts of the country with multi-sectoral involvement.

The organizing committee, headed by Dr. Jose Dante P. Dator, has prepared a number of activities that include an exhibit at the NKTI and the Ayala Mall, Glorietta 4, Ayala Center, Makati City, which will showcase the different services of the Institute. Community Outreach services (free urinalysis, fasting blood sugar, blood pressure determination) will also be held at the same venue.

Other significant activities include the launching of the NKTI Institutional Video, Radio, and TV Plug on Organ Donation; blessing of Chronic Kidney Disease, Education and Counseling Office; hospital-wide conference on "Ultrastructural diagnosis of renal and oncologic diseases;" and a "Kidney Check" for the first 100 patients at NKTI (free urinalysis, CBC, creatinine, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure determination.

During the month-long event, a "Batong Bulilit Art Contest" will be held, featuring artworks of pediatric patients afflicted with kidney disease. A Golf Tournament at Canlubang Golf and Country Club called "Golf for Kidney Care 2" will also be staged, proceeds of which shall go to the NKTI Rainbow fund to help indigent patients.

On the medical side, there will be a lay forum on "Issues on chronic kidney disease;" Nursing professional forum and transcultural nursing in NKTI: A reflection; Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN) and Philippine Urological Association (PUA) joint symposium; Free digital rectal exam and Free prostate specific antigen (for the first 50 patients only at NKTI); Organ Donor’s Day; Maria Corazon Torres Javier (MCTJ) Foundation-sponsored kidney transplant for an indigent patient; Kidney Transplant Association of the Philippines Tribute to Organ Donors; 3rd Post-Graduate Course in Urologic Laparoscopy and a workshop on the use of Botox in Urology.

NKTI employees, friends and benefactors are set to be tributed during the celebrations, along with outstanding kidney transplant recipients. The book "May Bukas Pa" (Kaalaman para sa mga pasyenteng may End Stage Renal Disease) is also scheduled to be launched during the month.

The nationwide celebration for the whole month of June is made possible by the coordination and collaboration of partners in the promotion of health care: the Department of Health (DoH), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP), Philippine Urological Association (PUA), Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN), Transplant Society of the Philippines (TSP), Kidney Foundation of the Philippines (KFP) and various pharmaceutical companies.

The NKTI invites the public to join in the celebration of the National Kidney Month. For more information, contact Nerissa M. Gerial, Public Information Officer, NKTI, at tel. no. 928-0355 or visit www.nkti.gov.ph.
