CENTRO ATLETICO’S Gelita Castillo and Peter Magnaye fashioned out victories in varying fashions to capture the singles crowns in the centerpiece 14-under division of the JVC Open Junior Badminton Championships at SM Mall of Asia yesterday.

The 11-year-old Castillo, who has never dropped a set on her way to the finals, lost the first set but bounced back strong in the second before wearing down Abigail Garcia in the decider to complete a heart-stopping 16-21, 21-6, 21-17 victory in the girls’ final.

Magnaye, on the other hand, copped the boys’ title in straight sets but the 13-year-old PNP bet had to go through some anxious moments before finally thwarting Kevin Panganiban’s tough stand for a 21-13, 24-22 victory in the boys’ championship.

Garcia, however, took the girls’ doubles plum in a team-up with Malvinne Alcala as they beat Jessa Sampurna and Pia Fabros, 21-16, 21-10.

Earlier, Lance Bautista repulsed Michael Bote in a thrilling three-setter, 21-15, 16-21, 21-18, to snatch the boys singles crown, while Gelita Castillo outclassed Alcala, 21-16, 21-11, to cop the girls’ singles crown in the 12-under division of the tournament sponsored by JVC (PHILS.), Inc.

Castillo later came back and teamed up with Selina San Diego to nip Ma. Bianca Santos and Ma. Victoria Vizmonte, 22-20, 21-18, and win the girls’ doubles title while John Monterubio and Bryan Ocenar stopped Bautista and Daniel Macaraig, 21-18, 21-23, 21-16, to nail down the boys doubles crown, also in the 12-under category.

In the 10-under finals, Cassandra Lim needed an extra set to tame Marina Caculitan, 21-8, 19-21, 21-9, and pocket the girls’ singles title while Carlo Remo outplayed Alvin Morada, 21-15, 21-10, to capture the boys’ singles plum.

Lim made it a double victory later as she partnered with Jacky Kaeyzer to defeat Ingrid Obinial and Alyssa Leonardo, 21-19, 21-10, and bag the girls’ doubles title, while Joshua Monterubio and Carl Clemente downed Sonny Lozadas and Francis Ablang, 21-13, 21-16, to claim the boys’ doubles plum.
