Army, PAF win openers

POWERHOUSE Philippine Army and Philippine Air Force stamped their class against their opponents, even as Far Eastern University whipped the Archers to start their title aspirations on the right track at the start of the 2006 Adidas Futsal Championship at the F-MAC Gym, La Salle Greenhills High School.

The Armymen, banking on the heady plays of Wilson dela Cruz, nipped Pasargad Football Club, 6-4. Roel Gener sparked the assault of the Army booters after scoring the team’s first goal right in the first minute as Philippine Army took a 5-2 lead in the first half.

Gener added another goal eight minutes later, while Dela Cruz scored on two spectacular plays in the 10th and 15th minutes of the first half. Luis Brillantes scored the lone goal in the second half for the Army to cap the win.

Rodney Layble led Pasargad’s losing stand with two goals in the first half.

The Air Force quintet were just as brilliant.

With Emilio Caligdong proving unstoppable, the Air Force swamped the Veterans FC, 6-2. Caligdong had four goals, two each in the two halves, while PAF’s tight defense limited the Veterans’ output to two, all in the first half.

Yanti Barsales and Edsel Bracamonte scored the other two goals for Air Force, which tied the Army for a 1-0 record in the first division.

In women’s play, Ruchell Latap blasted two goals, while Sheila Ninobla, Kathlene Kipte and Kristina Pajelqot steered FEU to a convincing 5-2 win against the Archers, who are composed of former La Salle booters.

In the only other match, Miriam College and University of Asia and the Pacific battled to a 2-2 draw.
