Thin Is In

I had the chance to own a NEC L1 clamshell phone, decked out in an attractive black and silver finish, which was sometimes mistaken by my friends for a calculator. This mini-marvel, with a vaguely iPod-look, supports mobile internet GSM/GPRS and comes with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS digital camera onboard.

This may be the world’s second thinnest 2.5G clamshell phone after Samsung launched its thinnest phone a month ago. At 11.9mm, it easily gains the most attention in its class. It is a tri-band phone (900/1800/1900) with Bluetooth connectivity. Unfortunately, the battery is non-removable and you have to bring it to the NEC service center if you want to take it out.  On the bright side it has an OLED external display and a 65k color TTFT screen with a 176x220 pixel resolution for its main display. The tactile feeling of the keypad is average, but build quality is excellent. Navigation is not quite as easy as the masses’ Nokia phones.

One good aspect of NEC L1 is its speed. Some tiny phones seem to lack processing power leading to slow response times. But this phone’s response is instantaneous. The L1’s rock-solid quality and fast response time make it a joy to use. The phone’s measurements are 90.8x47.9x11.9mm and it weighs only 94g. It has 26MB of internal storage, a USB connector at the bottom and an MP3 player.  A useful software suite allows you to load your own videos, photos and sound/MP3 files for use as ring tones. My own grade for this phone is three stars out of a possible five.
