YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT: By JOAN SUMPIO, RND

Every month of June, national health events include the "National Kidney Month". This two-bean shape organ is very important in excretion of our waste products and maintenance of homeostasis in our body. Never should we be occasionally conscious about the health of our kidneys…we need to take care of it every second of our lives.

At summer time, we become conscious of the color of the urine that we pass out, if it is too dark yellow, it means we are dehydrated and our kidneys are prone to infections as the waste products are left un-passed from our system. The cold season is the time for paying more attention to the health of your kidneys and their companion organ, the bladder.

During this season you can either strengthen your kidneys or make them weaker, depending on your diet, clothing, attitude, and other lifestyle factors. Almost 60 percent of your body is water. To create the best health you must keep this water at the right level of mineral concentration and at the proper pH. For this, strong kidneys are necessary.

For some of people, keeping their kidneys healthy are not an easy task especially when damage, small as it may be, has been inflicted. As kidney functions slows down more and more restrictions are adopted into the person’s diet. Beginning with limiting protein intake to having many minerals in very limited amounts (e.g. sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus) is a very agonizing scenario at meal time. Others can be used to it, simply thinking that those restriction will keep them alive longer. But others still prefer to experience the joy and pleasure of eating having themselves dialyzed after all. With restrictions in protein intake, how is a kidney failure patient able to meet the body’s needs for protein to keep its repair and growth functions going? Have you heard of what we call protein analogues? An analogue is a structural derivative of a parent compound that often differs from it by a single element. Thus, a protein analogue is a substitute to the meat products that a kidney patient may take in to continuously meet his protein needs without having to burden his kidneys in excreting waste products of protein metabolism.

An example of this is Ketosteril. Kidney specialists prescribe this to their patients to a maximum dose of nine tables a day. With this, the nutritionist’s work in planning the Renal Diet is simplified as she need not worry where to get the limited amount of protein while boosting the carbohydrate and caloric intake of the patient’s diet. Thinking of the condiments to go along with limited amount of protein in the diet will no longer be a problem. So for those with kidney failures, try asking your doctors about protein analogues, Ketosteril.
