CAMP MELCHOR DELA CRUZ, Isabela - Three soldiers were killed and two militiamen were wounded in a series of attacks by communist rebels in two remote villages in Kalinga Province over the weekend, a belated military report received here yesterday stated.
The Army’s 5th Infantry Division based here identified two of the soldiers killed in the ambush as Corporal Toribio Raras and Private First Class Rey Galong.
The other slain soldier has yet to be identified.
The three government troopers were waylaid by several rebels of the New People’s Army (NPA) in a remote mountain village in Balbalan town, Kalinga last May 25, the field report stated.
The following day, two members of the civilian auxiliary force, identified as Pedro Salvador and Milini Awingan, were wounded when they were attacked by NPA rebels at a remote sitio in Pinukpuk town.
Military authorities here said that both militiamen were undergoing treatment at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital.
The twin attacks on the soldiers, the Army said, also led to the loss of three M16 Armalite rifles and one M203 grenade launcher.
The attacking rebels were believed to be members of the Cagayan Valley Regional Party Committee-Kalinga-Apayao Front, the report added.
The military command here has deployed troops to track down the rebels.
