LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The suspected gunman in the killing of a militant labor leader last month in San Nicolas, this province was arrested yesterday, ending speculation of leftist groups that the military or the police has something to do with the slaying.
Senior Supt. Alan La Madrid Purisima, Pangasinan police director, said his men collared Joel S. Flores of Barangay Dumampot, Asingan town, the alleged gunman in the killing of Jose Doton, president of the TIMMAWA (Tignay Dagiti Mannalon ng Mangwayawaya iti Agno River) and secretary general of Bayan Muna.
Reports stated that last May 16, Doton was shot by motorcycle-riding men on Anong Road, Sabangan River. Barangay Camanggaan, San Nicolas.
Doton was pronounced dead on arrival in a hospital, while his brother Cancio Doton who suffered bullet wound in the body survived.
The killing of the labor leader was earlier condemned by militant organizations.
This prompted Colonel Purisima to form a task force and designated Supt. Noli G. Talino as Task Force commander to investigate the killing and run after the suspected killers of the labor leader.
Purisima said that the probers got a break while they were conducting followup investigations. They were able to identify the plate number and owner of the motorcycle, a Honda TMX red with plate number HM 8571, that was allegedly used in the killing of the victim. (Mar Supnad)
