Developing the total person for social transformation
The BATAAN HEROES MEMORIAL COLLEGE (BHMC), a private and non-sectarian educational institution, was founded in June 1979 by the late Engr. Sesenio S. Rosales and Dr. Laureana S. Rosales.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
BHMC was envisioned by its founders to serve as a monument to the legacies left by the heroes of Bataan more than five decades ago. These legacies of courage, human endurance, burning patriotism and the indominability of the Filipino spirit are values worth emulating and inculcating in the minds of the youth.

The Bataan Heroes Memorial College, an idyllic 11.6-hectare cradle of modern heroes, at Roman Superhighway in Balanga City, Bataan | | Dr. Rosales, being a native of Limay, Bataan, spent the war years in Bataan and witnessed the sacrifices of the Filipino soldiers and civilians during the war. This vision of sacrifice long haunted her until finally, in the early part of 1978, she and her husband, Engr. Rosales decided to open a school in Bataan which is the fifth school they had established in Mindanao and elsewhere, later to be known as the Capitol System of Schools.
BHMC was founded in the conviction that no other agency permeates its influence on the greater bulk of the population than the educational institution itself; hence, the crucial and important role of the school in the area of human resource development.
BHMC started operation in school year 1979–1980 with 293 freshmen enrollees in General Engineering, Maritime Education, Commerce, Liberal Arts and Secondary Education. Before the year ended, the ROTC Department was activated as the 526th NROTC Unit of the Philippine Navy.
As an institution of higher learning, the College commits herself to the achievement of national unity as was Bataan several decades ago – a unifying experience that showed the entire struggle the Filipinos had waged for liberty and solidarity. It likewise aspires for modernization, self-reliance and social justice.
PRESENT TIMES
After barely three decades of existence, the Bataan Heroes Memorial College has found her place in the sun.
BHMC is one of the schools under the so-called Capitol System of Schools, of which Capitol University is the flagship school established by the Rosales couple. Among the members of the System are the Capitol University, Capitol General Hospital Foundation, Inc., and St. Francis Learning Center, all in Cagayan de Oro City; Iligan Capitol College and Lyceum of Iligan Foundation, both in Iligan City; and Gingoog City Junior College, in Gingoog City.
BHMC is located along Roman Superhighway, west of Balanga City proper. The buildings are made of bricks and concrete that sit on an 11.6 hectare-estate overlooking scenic Manila Bay. Directly behind it is the world-renowned marker of the Dambana ng Kagitingan atop the historic Mt. Samat.
The buildings are surrounded by flowering plants, shady fruit trees that provide natural coolness to the classrooms, laboratories, shops and offices – ambiance makes BHMC an ideal place to study. The serenity of the campus, being free from air and noise pollution and other man-made disturbances, makes it perfectly conducive to learning.
Through its varied programs, BHMC seeks to develop the "Total Person", an individual who is physically, mentally and spiritually sound and who will serve as a catalyst for change in the society. With its general education program, BHMC aims to develop clear-thinking individuals who possess desirable cultural, moral and spiritual values who will take pride of their Filipino heritage. With these, the College aspires to make relevant quality education available to all sectors of the society, especially to the masses, in order for the people to uplift their lives by the realization of the full potentials of the young.
Congruent to BHMC’s thrust to concentrate on programs relevant to the country’s development goals, the College now offers Engineering in different disciplines – Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. It also offers B.S. in Computer Science, Criminology, and Secondary Education majors in English, Science, Mathematics and Computer Education. The College also offers Certificates in Structural Drafting and in Plant Maintenance and Associate in Computer Technology, which are ladderized curricula towards Civil and Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science, respectively. This is in response to the felt-need of industry for qualified manpower along these lines.
The BHMC community humbly acknowledges the institution’s success as it is busy preparing itself for the future. BHMC presently strengthens its programs by continuously updating curricula, acquiring additional state-of-the-art facilities, expanding its physical plant, laboratories and libraries for accreditation. The College likewise strengthens its faculty through the BHMC Faculty Development Program to provide students with the theoretical and practical instructions, as well as the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop them into well-rounded individuals.
Today, despite its relatively young age, BHMC is a premier educational institution in the province of Bataan and the whole of Central Luzon. It stands proudly on its achievement of developing the youth into "Total Persons", well-rounded professionals equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, values and proper attitude, to become tomorrow’s leaders and vital components of regional and national development goals.
Although BHMC is a non-sectarian College, it still observes Catholic Liturgical celebrations and religious feasts and activities, of which the Immaculate Conception is the Patroness of the College. Spiritual retreats and recollections are held without prejudice to other religious sects represented in the Campus.
The BHMC alumni, most of whom are occupying responsible positions in the government and private sector or are employed overseas, are pillars of the community and responsible citizens of the country. Today, they are, in their own little way, the "heroes" which their Alma Mater molded them to be, after the noble heroes in the past in whose honor and memory BHMC is humbly dedicated.
