Pacquiao to drop three US backers

By NICK GIONGCO

DISENCHANTED WITH the way things have turned out lately between him and his American handlers, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao said yesterday he may let the contract lapse when it ends in January next year.

This was bared by Pacquiao yesterday as he claimed there are matters that Shelly Finkel, Nicholas Khan and Keith Davidson, his American handlers, have been withholding from him.

His move also means he is supporting lawyer Ging Gacal and adviser Wakee Salud in their legal fight against the three Americans who sued the two Pacquiao advisers for million citing various violations.

"Gusto nila ay mag-renew ako ng kontrata at iyan ang lagi nilang ini-insist na kailangan pero hindi mangyayari iyon (dahil) alam ko na ngayon na marami pa nga silang kulang sa akin na hindi nila binigay," Pacquiao said in an e-mail.

Pacquiao, however, refused to disclose the alleged shortcomings of his American team which joined him last year after the boxer jettisoned Murad Muhhamad and Rod Nazario as promoter and manager.

"Wala pang full disclosure sa lahat ng contract," said Pacquiao from Los Angeles.

Last week in Los Angeles, the Americans filed a lawsuit against Gacal and Salud, whom they accused of contract interference stemming from the fighters’ decision to seal a deal with ABS-CBN to co-promote his July 2 bout with Oscar Larios of Mexico.

For the case to be withdrawn, Finkel and company are demanding million.

Salud expressed surprise over the case filed against them and is confident that it will not prosper.

"I don’t know of anything wrong that I committed," said Salud, who is leaving for Los Angeles tonight with Gacal to meet with Pacquiao. They also plan to be at ringside when Bobby Pacquiao, Manny’s younger brother, slugs it out with Kevin Kelley at Madison Square Garden in New York this weekend.

Pacquiao continues to train at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California, for the Larios duel at the Araneta Coliseum. Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach are expected to arrive in Manila on June 20.
