A Filipina beauty who played Board 3 for her adopted Australia, caused a punching incident between two grandmasters, one of them ranked third in the world, who battled for her affection during the recent World Chess Olympics in Turin, Italy.
Arianne Bo Caoili, who played Board 1 for the Philippines during the Bled Olympiad in 2002, but has since moved to Australia where she has carried that nation’s colors the past two Olympiads, apparently captured the imagination of Grandmaster David Gormally, Board 4 of England and GM Levon Aronian, Board 1 of eventual champion Armenia.
Chessers are known for cool, calculated moves, but Gormally probably sensed he was losing the battle of the hearts when Arianne chose Aronian to dance with her during a party for players.
Gormally went after Aronia, punched him in the face before cooler heads separated the two.
British chess officials sent Gormally home after the incident.
Losing one’s composure in the face of a rebuke from Arianne is probably too much to bear as the Fil-Australian, besides being a stunning beauty, also possesses an intellect of massive proportions.
When she graduated in Australia, she ranked among the top two percent nationwide.
She plans to enter law school but chess will be in her future equation.
In a past interview, she said that besides a law diploma and a legal career, she also intends to nail a grandmaster title.
She will be in Europe also for further language studies and plans to master at least three European languages.
In Europe, she is expected to again cross paths with her admirers, Gormally and Aronian.
Her next move may produce not just a punching incident but probably a mate.
