Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay directed the city’s police and other security forces yesterday to tighten their watch on key establishments to avert another possible bomb attack and other criminal activities.
During a two-hour meeting held at the 22nd floor of the Makati city hall which was attended by representatives from nearly 40 embassies and consulates, Binay directed the Makati Police and the Makati Department of Public Safety (DPS) to ensure 24-hour presence at the Makati Central Business District to guard all vital facilities and thoroughfares. Representatives from major banks, hotels, security agencies, mall and hotel owners, barangay officials and police and public safety officers, and schools also joined the conference.
Binay also ordered the deployment of more DPS and police personnel in plainclothes in the city.
The mayor also said the city government is giving the Makati police 10 additional patrol cars and 25 motorcycle units and several handheld radios.
He also urged security officers and personnel of private firms to widen the scope of area they are guarding to include the perimeter of the building or establishment they are shielding.
Binay said that while the city is ready to meet any contingencies, he said the cooperation of all officials of embassies and corporations holding office in Makati is still critical to address the security problem and threats and rumors of terrorist attacks.
"The city government is ready to meet any emergency, that is why we are holding this conference – precisely to address these rumors and assure them that everything is under control," Binay said, referring to the reports circulating that a shadowy group was planning more criminal activities.
Only recently, a pillbox bomb exploded at a building on Buendia Avenue and a grenade blast rocked an aqua sports shop located near Binay’s house in San Antonio Village.
The two Makati explosions were only part of a series of bombings that in Manila, Quezon City, Taguig and Pampanga.
Binay urged representatives and security officials who attended the security meeting to immediately collaborate with the Makati police.
"There is no need to emphasize the importance of sharing information. We may have the best contingency plans and facilities but if we do not have the right information, response will be affected," Binay said.
