MMDA seeks P2.4 B in additional budget

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is expected to obtain approval today of a resolution appropriating P2.4 billion for its operational expenses this year.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando is the presiding officer of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) where Quezon City Mayor and MMC appropriation chairman Feliciano Belmonte is likely to endorse the budget proposal.

"It would be endorsed by Mayor Belmonte and has already been approved by all committees of the MMC,’’ the MMC secretariat said.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) only approved an average of R1 billion as budget annually for the operational expenses of the MMDA.

A budget officer of the MMDA noted that since the approved budget is smaller than the operational allocation, the deficit would be carried over to the next budget of the agency.

"Though the appropriation of the MMC for the budget operations of the MMDA is bigger than the approved budget, the deficit would be filled in may be carried over to the next budget of the agency,’’ the budget division personnel added.

The DBM has yet to approve the R5-billion proposed budget sought by the MMDA this year. (Chito A. Chavez)
