Manila Mayor Lito Atienza will lead city officials in honoring this year’s outstanding Filipino artists by conferring them the Diwa ng Lahi at Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Awards in a formal ceremony to be held at the Bulwagang Antonio Villegas in Manila City Hall at 6 p.m. today.
The conferment of the awards by the City of Manila is part of the celebration of the 435th Araw ng Maynila, the city’s foundation day.
The awards was started in 1963 by the late Mayor Antonio Villegas to give due recognition to Filipino artists who have dedicated their talents and skills to promote their respective fields of artistic endeavor.
The recipient of this year’s Diwa ng Lahi Award is Architect Francisco "Bobby’’ T. Mañosa.
The Gatpuno Antonio Villegas Award will be conferred on Edith L. Tiempo.
The Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan awardees are Osias G. Barroso for Dance, Maria Elisa "Boots’’ Anson-Roa for Film, Dr. Mario I. Miclat for Literature, Herminigildo G. Ranera for Music, Judy Q. Sibayan for New Art Forms, Edgar Talusan Fernandez for Painting, Architect Maria Christina Valera-Turalba for Architecture, Director Joel C. Lamangan for Theater and Dr. Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo for the Tanging Parangal.
This year’s awardees were nominated and satisfied the following criteria: 1) Living artists who are Filipino citizens and embody the "Dugong Pilipino and Likhang Pilipino’’ spirit; 2) distinguished themselves through research and preservation of culture, promotion and development of their art; 3) created a significant body of work and/or displayed excellence in their art form; and 4) promoted the national cultural identity and the dignity of the Filipino people through the form and content of their work.
Last year’s awardees were the world-renowned Bayanihan: The Philippine National Folk Dance Company for the Diwa ng Lahi Award and Dr. Cirilo F. Bautista for the Gat. Antonio Villegas Award.
Recipients of last year’s Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Awards were Architect Jose Pedro C. Recio for Architecture, Jerusalino Araos for Sculpture, Peque Gallaga (Maurice Ruiz de Luzuriaga Gallaga) for New Art Forms, Freddie Aguilar for Music, Dr. Marjorie M. Evasco for Literature, Eddie Garcia (Eduardo Verchez Garcia) for Cinema, Antipas P. Delotavo Jr. for Painting, Fernando C. Josef for Theater, Douglas Nierras for Dance and Jaime Arevalo de Guzman for the Tanging Parangal.
Except for the recipients of posthumous awards, those chosen are required to personally receive their awards. Failure to do so would mean forfeiture of the award.
