Iraq, treasure trove of Biblical history

Nelly F Villafuerte

A FRIEND of my daughter Lalaine from Los Angeles, California e-mailed the following interesting Bible facts about Iraq which I am reproducing – highlighted by Chapter 9, Verse 11 of the Koran. To many of us here and abroad 9/11 has a memorable impact. Here is the e-mailed information:

"VERY INTERESTING that...

l The Garden of Eden was in Iraq.

l Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq, was the cradle of civilization.

l Noah built the ark in Iraq.

l The Tower of Babel was in Iraq.

l Abraham was from Ur, which is in Southern Iraq.

l Isaac’s wife Rebekah was from Nahor which is in Iraq.

l Jacob met Rachel in Iraq.

l Jonah preached in Nineveh, which is in Iraq.

l Assyria, which is in Iraq, conquered the ten tribes of Israel.

l The prophet Amos cried out in Iraq.

l Babylon, which is in Iraq, destroyed Jerusalem.

l Daniel was in the Lion’s den in Iraq.

l The three Hebrew men ordered thrown by KingNebuchadnezzar in the blazing furnace was in Iraq – Jesus had been in Iraq as the fourth person in the fiery furnace.

l Belshazzar, the King of Babylon saw the "writing on the wall’’ in Iraq.

l Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, carried the Jews captive into Iraq.

l Prophet Ezekiel preached in Iraq.

l The "wise men’’ were from Iraq

l Apostle Peter preached in Iraq.

l The "Empire of Man’’ described in Revelation is called Babylon, which was a city in Iraq.

l "And you probably know this one: Israel is the nation most often mentioned in the Bible. But do you know which nation is second? It is Iraq! However, that is not the name that is used in the Bible. The names used in the Bible are Babylon, Land of Shinar, and Mesopotamia. The word Mesopotomia means between the two rivers, more exactly between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The name Iraq, means country with deep roots. "Indeed Iraq is a country with deep roots and is a very significant country in the Bible.

l "No other nation, except Israel, has more history and prophecy associated with it than Iraq.

l "And also, This is something to think about ! Since America is typically represented by an eagle. Saddam should have read up on his Muslim passages.

l "The following verse is from the Koran (the Islamic Bible)

"Koran (9:11) – For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced, for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah; AND THERE WAS PEACE.’’

Hopefully, the interesting facts about Iraq abovementioned will encourage and challenge us to read the Holy Bible on a regular basis – everyday in our life. The Holy Bible, as I have mentioned many times in this column, is not a dull book. Far from it. The Holy Bible is a very exciting book that has close relevance in our life in this modern world.

Modern Iraq which is now at the epicenter of world attention was likewise the center of greatest powers in the ancient world. No wonder Iraq has hundreds of thousands of archeological sites. About 10,000 sites have been identified but only a few have yet been excavated. Meaning that many of Iraq’s ancient material past still remains buried. Today, there is a great threat that the treasured archeaological sites and priceless artifacts that have been buried for thousands of years will be destroyed because of the ongoing instability and violence in Iraq. It will indeed be tragic if this happens. As someone said: "War can destroy more than a people, an army or a leader. Culture, tradition, and history also lie in the firing line. "Simply because the excavations which contain the secrets of the life and civilizations of the people will be gone.

This column continues to give out copies of the Holy Bible for free to those who cannot afford to buy their own copies. If interested, please send your letter-request to Ms. Nelly Favis-Villafuerte, 5th floor, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Roxas Blvd., Malate, Manila. Kindly mention in your letter-request if it is the Tagalog, English, Ilocano or Cebuano version of the Holy Bible that is preferred.

This column is also giving out for free a 42-page 3 x 5 inch booklet that briefly explains the basic doctrine of salvation as presented in the Holy Bible. To those who are confused and struggling as to what the Holy Bible really says on how souls can be saved from eternal damnation – please do not hesitate to write me and ask for a copy of this booklet. Let us not forget the biblical verse that says: "What profits a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?’’

Have a joyful day!
