KIBAWE, Bukidnon - A geologist of the Region 10 office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) who conducted an investigation in Barangay Magsaysay, Kibawi town, Bukidnon, feared that another landslide may hit the area.
Engineer Juanito A. Manzano Jr., chief geologist of the Region 10 MGB office based in Cagayan de Oro City, in a report, said inspection showed that there were big cracks found in Barangay Magsaysay as well as structures being destroyed due to unusual earth movements.
Manzano said there were six houses that were badly damaged by the ground collapse. Also damaged were facilities such as the barangay health center, newly improved barangay road, barangay hall, basketball court, solar dryer, and electric posts and a drainage system.
Black and white photos provided by PENRO Agustilo Obsioma in Malaybalay City showed a big crack at the barangay health center, the almost sinking Magsaysay Elementary School, destroyed houses, and traverse cracks affecting barangays roads.
"Colored photos of the areas inspected last Tuesday were already sent to the Region 10 MGB office in Cagayan de Oro," Obsioma said.
The dangerous situation in Barangay Magsaysay, Kibawi was confirmed by Ceasar M. Apao, spokesperson of Bukidnon Gov. Jose Ma. Zubiri.
However, Apao declined to issue an official statement, saying the situation has yet to be assessed by the governor.
"We are still waiting for findings from concerned agencies tasked to conduct inspections. As of now, we have no comment," he said.
The report stated that on the eastern bank of the Pulangui River, "fine clastics are slightly dipping towards north and are moderately weathered. In one of the creeks flowing northeast, located north of the barangay proper, slightly moderate dipping grayish mudstones are well exposed.
Several traverse cracks, with variable dimensions, were noted to have affected an area of about 5-6 hectares encompassing the entire poblacion of Barangay Magsaysay, Puroks 1-3, and part of Sitio Lumbayan, where about 97 households are residing.
Meanwhile, Kibawi Mayor Luciano G. Ligan already evacuated hundreds of the affected families. He has also created teams to assist the families in their needs and to help them in the event a landslide occurs.
The mayor joined the team of MGB geologists who conducted survey and investigation of the situation in the barangay.
He also appealed to the provincial government of Bukidnon, Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council, Regional Disaster Coordinating Council and the NDCC to provide financial assistance in the event of a landslide.
He said the municipal government of Kibawi has set aside a two-hectare area at Sitio Kikipot, Barangay Talahiron as relocation site. (Joel Escol)
