When fashion becomes passion
spacer

By SHERYL G. LAUDATO

A seven–year friendship between Louis Claparols and Bobby Carlos turned into business after discovering that they both had a passion for fashion.

Designers, Louis, 32, and Bobby, 31, met through mutual friends. The connection was instant, linked by a shared fondness for fashion trends and styles.

Initially, the two opened an "ukay–ukay" store in their 2–bedroom apartment in Malate in September of 2005.

Their first customers were friends until some insisted that they set up a vintage fashion shop which Louis and Bobby eventually named "Marni’s Room."

"We got the name Marni’s Room from our most loved toy poodle named Marni who was given to me by Bobby’s mom (Corazon Ong) on Valentine’s Day last year. She was three months old then, and now she is turning two years old," Louis said.

He added that Marni was their lucky charm because their business bloomed after her arrival.

"We’re both crazy with stylish vintage clothes, shoes and bags. That’s why we decided to have a ‘sosy ukay–ukay’ business that turned into a secret vintage shopping place. Because of Marni, our business became well, we have lots of clients and we always have a very bright day because Marni is so lovable, fun to be with, very sweet, playful and friendly to us and to all our customers."

"My sister who is working in the U.S. also loves Marni. She even bought a gold necklace for her three months ago," Louis said.

Bobby and Louis admit that it’s their flight attendant friends who scour the country for vintage items to be sold at the shop or at a consignment basis.

"Our products are quite expensive (that’s) because they’re designer labels. But we assure clients that our items are in very good condition," noted Louis.

Dresses range from R1,000 to R5,000, blouses go for R600 to R1,000 up, belts R650 to R1,380, while bags range from R5,000 to R15,000.

Because the space in Malate is very small, the two decided to sleep together in one bed with Marni so that there would be enough space for their wares and customers.

Last May 16, the two moved shop to the 2nd level of the Powerplant Mall in Makati after customers complained that their shop was difficult to find.

"There is no sign going to our pad in Malate and you need to set an appointment before you go. You have to enter a small gray gate, that’s why our customers suggested that we move to a mall. It was my and Bobby’s idea to build a secret place for shopping since we wanted to be different while making our own fashion statement. Still, we have to give in to the clients’ wants and needs," Louis said.

Louis is pretty confident that Marni’s Room will be a long term business and they have plans of expansion in the future.

"I will give my very best and my whole dedication to this business because I know that Marni will continue to shower us the luck she has. Without her, I don’t know if Marni’s Room will still be here," Louis insisted.

By the end of July, the two are opening a branch in Ermita near Robinsons Manila.

Their latest finds are posted at Marni’s Room website www. picturetrail.com/marnisroom.
