France, Switzerland each win 2-0 to advance

BERLIN (AP) — Spain and Ukraine did exactly as expected Friday, each winning its match to eliminate Saudi Arabia and Tunisia from the World Cup.

France also won and advanced to the second round, beating Togo 2-0 to win for its first time in six World Cup matches. Switzerland won Group G by beating South Korea 2-0.

Spain won its third straight game at this year’s tournament, with a team of reserves beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in Group H to confirm the feeling that it may be about to lose its underachiever tag.

Ukraine, which became the first former Soviet republic to advance to the second round at a World Cup, beat Tunisia 1-0. Andriy Shevchenko scored from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.

France, which last won a World Cup match in the 1998 final, got goals from Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry. Vieira was celebrating his 30th birthday.

In the second round, Spain will play France on Tuesday in Hanover, while Ukraine plays Switzerland on Monday in Cologne.

Shevchenko scored his second goal of the tournament after he was knocked down while running between Tunisia goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel and defender Karim Hagui.

Tunisia finished the match in Berlin with 10 men after striker Ziad Jaziri was sent off in the last minute of the first half.

Jaziri received his second yellow of the match for a sliding tackle on Anatoly Tymoschuk.

"It was a good thing we scored when we did," Tymoschuk said.

"We didn’t concentrate properly and should have scored more."

Tunisia had a good chance to score in the 19th minute, when Hamed Namouchi curled a shot toward goal, but Ukraine goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy caught it comfortably under his crossbar.

Ukraine joins Ghana as the only two of the six newcomers in Germany to reach the second round. Angola, Ivory Coast, Togo and Trinidad and Tobago have all been eliminated.

Ukraine, which lost its opening match to Spain 4-0, became only the third team to advance to the second round after losing its opener since the World Cup expanded its field to 32 teams. Ghana also did it this year.

Russia, the only other former-Soviet republic to have qualified for the World Cup, was knocked out in the group stage in its only two appearances.

Spain, which has already assured itself of a spot in the second round, won its match in Kaiserslautern with a squad full of substitutes.

Center back Juanito Gutierrez headed in the only goal after a long free kick from Jose Antonio Reyes in the 36th minute, beating goalkeeper Mabrouk Zayed with a perfectly timed header. It was Juanito’s second goal for Spain.

The result extended Spain’s unbeaten streak under coach Luis Aragones to 25 matches, while Saudi Arabia exited its fourth consecutive World Cup.

Zayed stopped the Spaniards from taking a bigger lead just before halftime, saving a barrage of shots from Reyes, David Albelda and Joaquin.

Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares, filling in for Iker Casillas, was tested for the first time in the 57th when he saved Hussein Abdul-Ghani’s outside shot.

Saad al-Harthi then had Saudi Arabia’s best chance to equalize when he was set up in the penalty box in the 89th by Mohammed Noor, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

France took the lead in the 55th minute when Vieira fired a powerful right foot shot past Kossi Agassa. Henry added another in the 61st by holding off a defender and scoring with a low right-foot shot.
