Nature sets the tone for the 2nd Jewellery Design Competition, launched recently by the Guild of Philippine
Jewellers Inc. (GPJ), at the Peninsula Hotel.
"The competition marks the guild’s continuous commitment to the advancement and global recognition of the Philippine fine jewellery industry, by discovering new talents in crafting and designing these ornaments," noted Jay Camus, chairman of the design competition and director of GPJ.
Jay added that the competition challenges both novice and veteran jewellery artists to craft pieces that highlight the raw, unadulterated beauty of nature.
The competition, supported by PhilExport, Pearl2, Discovery Suites, Jewelmer Int’l, BPI Foundation, Sterling Gifts, Inc., New Life Jewelry and Hoseki Pearl, is open to students, professionals, individuals, companies and organizations based in the Philippines.
Fifteen (15) finalists will be selected from the total number of entries. The competition will be divided into three distinct categories, namely: all precious metals, all precious metals and gemstones; and all precious metals and non–traditional components.
Criteria for the winning designs are originality of design, interpretation of the theme and the design’s aesthetic and visual impact.
The guild hopes that the competition will usher the birth of a new generation of jewellery designers and raise the standards of the industry a notch higher.
"This year’s competition is more than just a showcase of fine jewelry pieces. We want to show the world that the Philippines has the ability to develop and harness fresh talents in jewelry creation," Jay enthused.
Deadline for submission of entries is on Aug. 28.
