Philippine Ladies Open champion Debbie de Villa carded a four-over par 75 at the Friendly Hills Golf Club in Los Angeles Thursday to advance to the US Women’s Amateur Golf Championship next month in Portland, Oregon.
De Villa shot nines of 39-36 to land eighth place and grabbed one of 10 slots available.
Six other members of the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) team headed by Coach Bong Lopez saw action in the event, one of the several qualifiers for this year’s US Women’s Amateurs. But Anya Tanpinco, Lora Roberto, Bambee dela Paz, Mia Piccio, Crystal Superal and Cyna Rodriguez all failed to make the grade as they struggled at the 71, 6,400-yard layout.
"The course is tough. It appears to be short on the yardage book but when you play it, it’s long. In fact, on the par-5 No. 1 (567 yards), only Anya and Mia managed to reached the green in regulation but with a 4-iron," said Lopez.
"But I admire Debbie’s focus and winning attitude. It was her dream to play in the finals," said Lopez.
The US Women’s Amateurs is slated Aug. 4-10 in Portland.
The last home-grown talent to make it to the US Women’s Amateurs was two-time LPGA winner Jennifer Rosales.
