Pompeii the City of Ruins POMPEII, Italy – Around mid-day in August, while the townsfolk go about their daily chores, men tend their horses, women prepare lunch and children play with their pets, the ground shook violently for several minutes. The tremors were ignored as they were fairly regular occurrences in the region. A little later, a loud thunderous explosion created a huge firework of ash, cinder, lava and fire balls that relentlessly poured over entire towns and neighborhoods nearby. Later, rivers of flaming lava flowed down the spewing land mass that buried and instantaneously killed everything along its path. This volcanic activity would continue for three days – snuffing out the lives of an estimated 1,100 Romans.
