A whole day seminar on the culture of tilapia in tanks, ponds and cages will be conducted this Saturday, July 1, at the AANI Seminar Center, FTI Complex, Taguig City.
To conduct the seminar will be aquaculture expert Jojo Baldia who has had extensive experience in growing this fish species under three different systems, both in the Philippines and abroad.
Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, the tank system can’t be hampered by bad weather such as typhoons and so production could be undertaken without let-up throughout the year. However, it requires quite a big capital in installing the tanks and other water facilities.
Culturing tilapia in cages also has its advantages. The cost of installing cages may be much less than that required by tanks and ponds. However, it could not be undertaken anywhere. The body of water should be suitable and duly allowed by the authorities.
Culturing tilapia in ponds is the most common system of growing this fish. This system has its own requirements and will be discussed in detail by Baldia. These include water management, feeds and nutrition, use of probiotics, sourcing of quality fingerlings and many others. Those interested to attend may call tel. 645-3605 or 839-1772 for more information.
Meanwhile, watch for forthcoming AANI seminars. On July 8, Pete Bersamin and Rudy Salcedo will conduct a seminar on growing high-value vegetables in hydroponics. This will be coupled with a farm tour where an existing hybroponics operation in Rizal will be observed.
On July 15, the prospects of Jatropha as a source of biodiesel will be discussed by Ramon Tan. Then on July 22, Antonio Rola will conduct a seminar on mango production, followed by Indigenous Bionutrients Technology by Gil Carandang on July 29.
