Sulyog '06

Sixty-one years of hard-fought battles to survive and maintain academic excellence led the Eastern Mindoro College to this point of commemoration as it looks back to each struggle it has faced for the past decades. Every wound it has let heal, every scar reminiscent of its past and every glory it has achieved, add to the celebration of EMC's 61st year. It has truly been a memorable one for both students and faculty.

This year’s school founding anniversay celebration focused on the cultural and sports aspects. With its SULYOG Festival showcasing local cultures and the Intersection basketball league in sports.

Sulyog, a celebration of joy and thanksgiving attributed to what the town is known for - banana and coconut. (Sulyog - from two local words SULI which means banana and NIYOG, coconut) was the inspiration of the organizers of the event.

The activities last March 2 were the following: Thanksgiving mass, parlor games, championship games (basketball and volleyball) and the most awaited cultural presentation named after the celebration "Sulyog 2006" and the Search for Ms. EMC Sulyog 2006 which gained the highest number of audience attendance in this year’s municipal/local celebration.

A unique cultural presentation directed by the HS principal Mrs. Minda Manalo, highlighted by the Search for Ms. EMC Sulyog ‘06 was staged. With the ten beauties parading the originally crafted and designed gowns by some of the HS faculty members and local designers using the raw materials taken from coconut and banana, it was indeed a successful show of talents and craftmanship.

Gracielle Rocephine V. Amparo was unanimously chosen by the judges as Ms. EMC Sulyog ‘06 having carried the best hand crafted gown and executed an outstanding dancing with a catwalk.

The second day of celebration was marked by a display of colors through street dancing contest along the J.P. Rizal St. that winded through the Poblacion and back to the main campus. The participating contingents were made of the five groups from the two departments, college and high school. Each had performed a tribal-inspired number. Well crafted costumes still made from banana and coconut materials were the biggest attraction in the said event. Street dancing was aimed at awakening the people towards culture and drumming up awareness of local tourism and hopefully making students proud to be Pinoy.

The celebration ended in a party hosted by the Sangguniang Mag-aaral of the High School Department and participated by the school and community populace.
