Letran tries to keep slate clean

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

DEFENDING CHAMPION Letran College hopes to keep its immaculate record intact when it collides with bitter-rival Philippine Christian University (PCU) in a showdown of the titans in the NCAA basketball tournament today at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Knights and Dolphins will meet for the first time since the Intramuros-based squad beat PCU in an emotional title series last year.

Game time is set at 4 p.m. with coach Louie Alas looking wary of their chances against the Dolphins who are on a four-game winning roll.

The Knights, who won their first three games, will again be spearheaded by the exciting duo of Aaron Aban and Boyet Bautista – both PBL veterans.

"Malalim ang bench ng PCU so medyo lamang sila sa manpower," said Alas. "So we have to play hard from start to finish to beat them."

In the other senior match, Mapua Tech and College of St. Benilde clash at 2 p.m. with both teams determined to improve their records. The Cardinals have a 2-2 record while the Blazers have a dismal 1-3 record.

Junior match pitting the San Sebastian Staglets and the San Beda Red Cubs, which was originally scheduled last Wednesday, raises the curtain at 12 noon. The match was cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

Joel Dualan, who inherited the coaching job following the sudden resignation of Junel Baculi, exudes guarded optimism in their duel with the Knights, saying: "We’re doing fine in our last four games but Letran remains as a tough squad. Even if they lost several key players, their starters and their bench players have a lot of experience."

Expected to pose a big headache for Alas is former MVP Gabby Espinas, who is itching to get back at the Knights. He starred in the team’s 81-77 victory over Jose Rizal University last Monday in preparation for today’s crucial game.

The return of Jason Castro is another cause of concern for the Knights. The wily guard was not allowed to play the last time out as a matter of team policy for missing the team’s practice.

Also expected to provide firepower for the Dolphins are Robby David, Beau Belga, Ian Garrido and Lei Navarro.
