By JEAN MALANUM

SOUTHEAST ASIAN Games gold medalist Cecil Mamiit is arriving today from the United States to compete in the 2006 BNP Paribas Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group 3 tournament slated July 19-23 at the Manila Polo Club.

The California-based Mamiit, who together with American Kevin Kim reached the first round of the Wimbledon men’s doubles main draw, will spearhead the campaign of Team PLDT-Philippines in the five-day event hosted by the Philippine Tennis Association.

Mamiit’s long-time doubles partner Frederick Taino, who is based in New Jersey, will arrive tomorrow night. Taino and Riza Zalameda won the mixed doubles gold in last year’s SEAG.

Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose Cojuangco and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez will be the special guests during the opening ceremony starting at 9 a.m.

Also attending the simple opening rites are Bacolod rep. Monico Puentevella, ambassadors of participating countries Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and officials of Manila Polo Club.

Drawing of lots and the welcome dinner for the players and team officials will be held on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Turf Room.

Mamiit, ranked No. 203 in the world and Taino, rated No. 271, are expected to carry the fight for the Filipinos who were relegated to Group 3 this year after losing to Korea and Lebanon in last year’s Group 2 competitions.

Taino is coming off an impressive stint in the Illinois Challenger last week where he won the doubles title.

The top two teams in this year’s tournament will be promoted to Group 2 while the last two will be demoted to Group 4.

Joining Mamiit and Taino in the RP squad are world No. 843 Patrick John Tierro, who is currently competing in the ITF Circuit, and SEAG veteran Johnny Arcilla. Former RP Davis Cupper Roland So will serve as non-playing captain while Martin Misa is coach.
