URBAN RENAISSANCE IF you think about it, urban is a word that has suffered many a connotation and derivative over the last few decades, what with the remarkably rapid shifts in pop culture trends and the consequent nuances of language. Just as the word "strike" means different things in different sports (a strike in bowling means you knock out all pins with one ball, but in baseball means the total opposite, which is when you miss a pitch, and in football even finds a derivative in the word striker, which is the player who attacks you when you have the ball), the word urban and its derivatives have found varied interpretations and implications in different aspects of culture and society over the years.
Beauty Bonanza OVER the weekend my friends and I got together for our quarterly pamper-me sessions. We used to do dinners, but we got so tired late in the evenings, and sometimes embarrassingly intoxicated with vodka (no hang-over), that our activities had to evolve into something that included a few beds in an extremely air-conditioned room. We realized a serviced apartment that had a jacuzzi and a bath tub is much more suitable for our ritualistic activities, which, of course, starts out with quiet massages and cleansing treatments, before all hell breaks loose. These days, we now include product testing, sharing and bashing. Bashing, because we needed something to either mock or dish out our frustrations and disappointments from the lousiest three-step instant cake all the way to the most incredibly priced beauty regimen they’ve ever paid for or dreaming to pay for. Not surprisingly, the latter was close votes among breast augmentation, nose job or a spa getaway trip somewhere in the Maldives. The Maldives was my choice.
LOOK FABULOUS To celebrate the relaunch of The Body Shop’s makeup range, Make Me Fabulous, the brand’s international makeup artist and consultant, Chase Aston, created these five looks for the various makeup lives of the modern woman:
DECODING THE DECODER THIS is maybe the only place and occasion you’d ever see it: inside ARIAS, the Artist Run Independent Arts Space, not a few weeks ago a mixed exhibit entitled Parangal hung on warm white walls, holding up many a question or a defiant statement (however you may see it) to anyone who was open-minded enough to receive it and ponder on its implications. And there would be nothing so unusual about an art exhibit, indeed, but this one comes off, perhaps, as a bit unnatural, and even something of an impossibility and a thing rarely done, if at all.
Turning the Tables on New Media BOBBY Nuestro is gaining recognition for championing New Media. With a penchant for invention and discovery, and an inclination to look forward to possible art trends, or at least a daring to play with what is evolving and new, he even runs an art space, ARIAS, for artists who share his ideals, and it has served up everything from more "traditional" exhibits to installations to performances and all else in between.
