Epson Launches New S4-Projector

Epson Philippines Corp. (EPC) recently unveiled its latest multimedia projector: the Epson EMP-S4.  The new projector enables more homes to enjoy significantly brighter picture quality in a smaller package with less noise and heat, and small businesses win more clients through great presentations.

Nationlink Enables On-line Rural Banking

Nationlink is rolling out 100 Nationlink ATMs nationwide in the next 12 months with the help of industry partners Diebold, Intel, Microsoft and PLDT.  Nationlink complements current ATM networks Bancnet, Megalink and Expressnet as the country's fourth ATM network by providing "kat mile" financial services delivery.

 

 

Nationlink is using advanced Intel desktop PC and server technology to enable their delivery of modern banking services to underserved rural areas.

BSA Rewards P500,000 to Piracy Informant

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) recently awarded 500,000 pesos to an individual who reported a company for using unlicensed software programs.  In the interest of protecting the individual, BSA decided not to divulge any information on the informant nor on the reported company.

 

 

"The BSA is pleased to reward this particular individual half a million pesos for his efforts in reporting the use of illegal software of the company," said Tarun Sawney, BSA Director for Anti-piracy, Asia. "His courage and initiative to come forth and report the erring company resulted in a successful raid against the corporation. We hope that this incident will serve as a warning to businesses that continue to engage in the use of pirated software."

Malware Volume to Double By 2008

McAfee claimed the the tally of viruses, worms, and Trojan horses is climbing so fast that today's total will double in the next two years.  The company said that it took them 18 years for their database to reach 100,000 malicious threats, and just under two years to double to 200,000.

 

 

At the current pace - 2006 should see more than 60,000 new threats, up from the 56,000 during 2005 - the 400,000 barrier should be broken in less than two years, McAfee said.

Wireless PCs Motivate Students Says Study

The Center for Research in Education Policy at the University of Memphis released a report indicating that students are self-directed and get highly personalized instruction with their own computers and Internet access. 

 

 

Of the 4,245 students (mostly sixth graders) who completed the survey, more than 60 percent said the notebooks increased their interest in learning. More than 87 percent said they want the computers next year, and nearly 60 percent said notebooks make schoolwork easier.

Google, Spyware Added to Dictionary

The eleventh edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary is set to officially bring 100 new words into the English lexicon, including a handful from the world of technology. "Google" is now a full-fledged verb that means using the Google search engine to retrieve information.

 

 

"Spyware" and "ringtone" are also new entrants into the dictionary, as well as "mouse potato," which means a person spending a great deal of time on the computer. Merriam-Webster lexicographers scour magazines, newspapers and Web sites in order to discover new phrases that are being used everyday. Also new to the dictionary: "supersize" and "bling."

Microsoft to Issue 7 Security Patches

Microsoft plans to release 7 security bulletins as part of its July 11 Patch, the company said. Four of the updates are for Windows, with the most severe being rated as "critical." Three other patches are directed at Office, also with a maximum severity of "critical."

 

 

Two vulnerabilities in Excel are likely to be among the fixes.   Two security flaws affecting Internet Explorer were also reported.  Along with the 7 security patches, Microsoft will release one high-priority non-security update that is not for Windows.

eBay Announces Senior Management Changes

eBay Inc. announced several changes in the company's senior management, including the planned departure of PayPal President Jeff Jordan and the elevation of several company leaders into new positions. The changes will help the company leverage the expertise of top executives and further eBay's efforts to build synergies among its brands.

 

 

Long-time eBay executive Rajiv Dutta will replace Jordan as President of PayPal.  Alex Kazim, currently Vice President of Products for Skype, will assume the role of President of Skype.  Henry Gomez will become Chief Marketing Officer and Director of Country Operations Worldwide for Skype.  Lorrie Norrington will be the President of eBay International.  Josh Silverman will assume day-to-day operations at Shopping.com.
