BASED on her reading of the encyclical "Deus Caritas Est" given her by Pope Benedict XVI, President Arroyo has accused Msgr. Deogracias Iñiguez of violating church doctrine, if not also the constitutional provision on the separation of church and state when he filed his impeachment complaint against her.
Support in the campaign against corruption
A COUPLE of days after President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo reiterated her administration’s resolve to push economic development through governance reform, including continuing the fight against corruption, the government of the Philippines and the United States signed a grant agreement under the US government’s Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) program that would provide million for the Arroyo administration’s campaign against graft and corruption.
Speaking Out
WE are not taking any chances with the lives and well-being of Filipinos and our crisis team is deploying all means to fix the location and our nationals in the four corners of Lebanon and take them out of harm’s way. Our blueprint is focused both in the immediate area of conflict as well as the outlying areas that could be involved if the conflagration widens. The presence of Filipinos in potential conflict areas is an issue that we have to deal with perennially; and President Arroyo is committed to work out a policy that will limit overseas workers’ deployment to safer places of work. These emotionally-wrenching episodes of innocent Filipinos caught in war in foreign lands should be avoided; and this administration intends to be proactive in keeping them out of strife-torn territory. Meantime, our government joins the call of the UN and the international community for a halt in hostilities to open the door for humanitarian aid and facilitate the evacuation of non-combatants.

THE Catholic Church is celebrating the life and work of St. Ignatius of Loyola. He was born 1491 in the Loyola family castle in the Basque region of Spain. As a young man, Ignatius devoted his life to a military career, hoping to advance in the service of the Viceroy of Navarre. However, during the defense of Pamplona in 1520, he suffered a serious leg wound that required several months of rest and convalescence. This afforded him time to reflect on his life and personal values. Gradually, Ignatius began a process of conversion and that totally reshaped his priorities and values.

IT is difficult for me to write about Speaker Joe de Venecia and remain objective. In the early 50s, we started out in life as budding journalists in separate outfits. Eventually he wandered into business and politics while I remained in journalism. Although we pursued separate careers, we remained steadfast friends all these 50 years or so.
