Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez yesterday blamed the failure of the police to solve the killings of journalists and activists on the lack of cooperation by the victims’ families in prosecuting those behind the slayings.
In a press conference, Gonzalez said the success of the 10-week deadline set by President Arroyo for the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Justice (DoJ) to jail the suspects in the killings of journalists and activists in the country depends on the "sincere and honest effort" of every sector of society.
Gonzalez said he already met and discussed with PNP chief Director General Oscar Calderon some points on how to meet the 10-week deadline set by Mrs. Arroyo for the police to produce results in its investigation on the killing of journalists and activists in the country.
"It depends if the police say we are ready to provide evidence, if the police capture the suspects. I already discussed this with Calderon. The usual stumbling block is the attitude of lawyers. That is a very big question mark here. There are lawyers who refused to have their clients inquested," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said aside from the PNP and the DoJ, other sectors of society such as militant groups, journalist associations, the victims’ families, and witnesses must work together to solve the killings of journalists and activists in the country.
"That is their fault already. They want us to solve the cases. But they did not cooperate. They are hypocrites. For people who want justice, they must not compromise with tyranny. What we need here is a sincere and honest effort of everybody," Gonzalez said.
He said in cases of extra-judicial killings, it is important for the authorities to find out who are involved.
