Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco ordered the municipal health office yesterday to intensify the drive against the spread of rainy season ailments such as flu, common cold and other water-borne diseases.
Aside from the health office, the mayor also instructed other offices, including the Public Information and the Engineering departments, to ensure the success of the health campaign.
Tiangco instructed these offices to continue declogging and cleaning operations on all esteros, canals and waterways.
He also ordered the activation of the barangay emergency health teams to monitor and coordinate all reports of rainy-day diseases in all barangays.
Dr. Hector David, the city health officer, said symptoms of the flu include fever, headache and muscle pains, sore throat, coughing and fatigue.
Health officials said symptoms of the common cold include a scratchy throat, sneezing and runny nose.
Tiangco called on the people of Navotas to keep their surroundings clean and be familiar with the symptoms of diseases. He said the spread of bacteria and viruses can be avoided with proper information and awareness.
He also advised the public to eat a balanced diet and do regular exercise.
Those already ill should take a rest, drink plenty of fluids, take Vitamin C, and take care not to spread the infection, he said.
"Prevention is better than cure. This campaign is very important especially this rainy season. I hope my fellow Navotenos will value the importance of cleanliness as potent weapon in fighting all kinds of diseases," Tiangco said.
