The Department of Education (DepEd) has scheduled for Aug. 24-26 a regional training of public elementary and secondary school campus journalists and their school paper advisers in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Dr. Teresita Guzman Domalanta, NCR DepEd director, said the training, indicated in DepEd Memorandum No. 203, is mandated by Republic Act No. 7079 otherwise known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.
Domalanta said the training, to be conducted by the DepEd regional secondary and elementary education divisions, primarily seeks to further enhance the campus journalistic competencies of student scribes and their teacher-advisers.
According to Domalanta, the upgrading of the journalistic skills of the student penpushers and school paper advisers will focus, among other things, on copyreading and headline writing, sports writing and layouting.
The memorandum, Domalanta siad, called for the participation of at leats 24 campus writers and teacher-advisers from each of Metro Manila’s 17 school divisions to the three-day regional training.
The participants should be nominated by the DepEd NCR regional coordinator for journalism in coordination with the Regional School Paper Advisers Associaton, Domalanta said.
The Metro Manila education chief said the journalism training will be subsidized with R10,000 by the campus journalism funds which will also provide R6,000 donation to each participating school division. (Tony Pe. Rimando)
