During the recent Eucharistic celebration officiated by Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales at the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), the church leader extolled the virtues of Jose P. Laurel, the school’s founder and the second President of the Republic ofthe Philippines.
He said that the well-loved former President was a true leader, guided by his steadfast vision for the country, part of which was providing quality education for the youth, the country’s most precious resource.
Citing Lyceum as the great statesman’s legacy for the country, His Eminence enjoined the students to become a valuable part of the education process by taking their studies seriously, and working hard to help achieve the school’s mission. The students must also be able to see what is good in them and develop such assets to become responsible members of society. Most of all, their hearts must always be open to accept valuable leadership exhibited by their teachers and other school officials, to steer them towards a successful future.
Speaking in a gentle tone at the university’s Hall of Freedom, the church leader recalled with admiration former President Laurel’s vision for the youth---providing them with a home for research and quality education, a home which encourages honesty, compassion for others, discipline, sacrifice and freedom.
Accompanying Cardinal Rosales during his Lyceum visit were Rev. Monsignor Vicente Bauson, Direytor of the Campus Ministry for Youth Affairs, Archdiocese of Manila; Rev. Carlo Bittante, Canossian Father, LPU Chaplain; Rev. Fr. Reginald Malicdem, Secretary of the Archbishop of Manila; and Rev. Fr. Pedro Galende of the Immaculate Conception Parish, San Agustin Church.
Aside from the students, in the audience were LPU officers: Board of Trustees member Lorna P. Laurel, President Atty. Roberto P. Laurel, VP-Finance Sarah Laurel-Lopez; and VP-Academic Affairs Dr. Kate C Botengan.
