Tanghalang Ateneo opens its 28th season, A Season of Awakening, with a bang of a comedy via Ang Aksidenteng Kamatayan ng Isang Anarkista, a political satire based on a true to life police cover up. The play, written by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo, and translated by Joseph dela Cruz, has been seen by millions in Europe and now comes to the Philippines laced with local color.
In the play, an anarchist and railway worker, arrested for bombing a bank and killing sixteen people, suspiciously dies at one point during the interrogation when he allegedly flew out the fourth-floor window of the police station. Was it a suicide, an accident, or a murder? Official investigations rule an "accidental death" and absolve the police of any wrongdoing. The public smell a cover-up but their clamor to re-open the hearing falls on deaf ears. Seeking to unearth the truth, a man known only as The Fool illegally infiltrates the police bureau, baffles inspectors involved in the case, and debunks the police testimonies of the case. In challenging the official version of the anarchist’s death and proving the conspiracy of the police in the cover up, the Fool exposes -- through the use of grotesque comedy – the idiocy of lies spun by officialdom.
