The Challenge of a Modern Filipiniana Theme Design

By Lala Baldelovar of Interplay Flowers & Events

There is always a sense of fulfillment in capturing the beauty and elegance of the Filipiniana concept in my work. While there are endless possibilities in the use of locally available and native products and materials, the challenge lies in fusing these elements to come up with a contemporary design. This to me is the essence of a modern Filipiniana wedding theme, which is basically a salute to Filipino ingenuity.

Our setup pays tribute to our rich cultural background, featured in a stage mounted on a modern perspective; a fun blend of modern and ethnic elements characterizes the design influences of this theme in the natural garden setting of Ibarra’s Portico Del Sol. For this particular project, I wanted to create a natural and elegant look with a touch of romanticism. The team worked on a design that will showcase local ingenuity without appearing too ethnic.

Portico’s Entrance

The design for the portico’s entrance signifies the modern Filipino blend with a cascading arrangement of sampaguita, twigs, roses, orchids, calla lilies and kamuning leaves accentuated by native salakots. A native arrangement on a modern stone architecture is in itself a vivid translation of the modern Filipiniana theme.

Wooden Gazebo

To maintain the simplicity and elegance of the wooden gazebo, kamuning leaves shaped into pomanders and stringed sampaguitas hang from the top, while pearl curtain beads at the background give that distinct modern look. For the couple’s table, an arrangement of white roses, hydrangeas, calla lilies, piña, papyrus and rice flower fillers and vine formosa.

Accents

Table napkins are wrapped in ti leaves with a single sampaguita strand to work with the theme.

An old white kalesa, with a cascading garden arrangement of white calla lilies and tall bamboo sticks, serves as a backdrop for a wicker basket of flowers atop a wooden garden bench.

A bouquet of burgundy and white calla lilies with cellum and papyrus fillers complements the modern Filipina bride.

Overall, styling for a native Filipiniana theme with a modern twist is definitely worth the challenge.
