Have you ever planned your perfect wedding before you’ve met your perfect man? If you answered no, you belong to 0.0001% of the female population, or probably just in denial. Most of us start fantasizing about weddings when we were little, thanks to fairytales. I used to doodle Princess Diana-inspired bridal gowns complete with puffy sleeves and tiaras, even if I thought I’d never get married. You see, my parents share the same birthday, one year apart, so I used to believe there’s a rule that you can only marry someone with the same birthday. Since no one in my first grade class shared mine, I deduced that I’m doomed to be a matandang dalaga.

Filipino weddings are reflective of the importance we give to the people in our life– from our family to our friends to our mentors and other people we look up to and respect. It is our symbolic representation of the bonds we have with these people that makes the Filipino wedding distinctive, extending its involvement beyond the usual bridal party. Here, we list down some of the more important elements present in every Filipino wedding:

A Middle Earth Wedding
A traditional wedding was never an option for me. For one thing, I felt that certain aspects of this, no matter how beautiful, would not suit me. I wanted something different from the pastel colors, embossed invitations with flowers and bells, doves flying around only to be painfully recaptured, or stodgy waiters serving set meals where one had to remember which fork to use. I had some pretty strong opinions, too, about what I wanted to happen. I did not want a solemn and formal affair where everyone would have to be on their best behavior, meaning that they’d be stiff and uncomfortable. I wanted my wedding to be something that my friends and I could enjoy, something that spoke about my husband and me rather than merely about this age-old and often-seen ceremony. Thus, I opted to have a themed wedding. This allowed my husband and me to create a unique and personal affair and to control as many aspects of the wedding as we wanted to.

The 1st "Kasal Pilipinas -Wonders of Weddings" takes place in San Francisco beginning Friday, August 11, 2006 at the Philippine Center located at 447 Sutter Street. On Saturday, August 12, "Kasal Pilipinas -Wonders of Weddings" moves to St. Patrick’s Church’s Social Hall, where it will remain until the following day, Sunday, August 13, to coincide with the popular annual Pistahan Festival celebrated at the Yerba Buena Gardens across the church.
