The Green Philippine Highways Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), to be launched on Aug, 25, is sustainable, said Secretary Angelo Reyes.
Under the program, some 516,000 tree saplings will be planted along 3,439 kilometers of the Pan-Philippine highway, coursing down from Laoag City to Bicol, then pushing up to Samar and Leyte, and then leading to Eastern Visayas, CARAGA and Davao City.
The tree saplings will be provided by the DENR and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, while the community, business, civic and church organizations and private individuals will plant and nurture the trees up to three years, when they shall become viable.
Reyes said the program will be sustainable and independent of the national government budget. The cost of planting and maintenance will be borne by sponsors called "adoptors."
DENR will mobilize its 22,000 and is expecting some two million participants planting trees along both sides of the highways from Laoag to Davao City and to also cover the 439 kilometer Manila North Road that runs from Laoag through La Union to Bulacan.
In Metro Manila, the program will cover the North Luzon Expressway, Commonwealth Avenue, C5 and the South Luzon Expressway. Likewise covered will be the 244-kilometer West Nautical Highway, stretching from Batangas through Mindoro, Aklan, Negros, Zamboanga and Sibugay.
