Cry of Pugad-Lawin Anniversary
IN 1842, Don Sinibaldo de Mas, Chief Judge of the Royal Audiencia in Manila, submitted a report to his superiors in Madrid outlining steps in governing the Philippines. Number one among his recommendations was the granting of reforms and ultimately freedom and self-rule to the people. This, he said, would earn for Spain the lasting gratitude and friendship of the Filipinos.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition
MORE than 200 years ago, an uprising took place on the island of Sto. Domingo, which is shared today by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The event shook the foundations of slavery to the core and marked the start of a process that would lead to the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. But despite the universal belief that slavery is part of world history’s dark past, there are more slaves today than were seized from Africa in four centuries of the slave trade. The modern commerce in humans rivals illegal drug trafficking in its global reach and in the destruction of lives.

WILLIAM H. Taft, stressed the vital role of the teacher in nation-building when he served as Civil Governor of the Philippines. He went on to become the 27th President of the United States.

Heads or tails
ONE might be dreaming if he thought that his criticism would improve another person and not alienate him instead. The criticism might only be treated as malicious.

Oil spills in Guimaras and Lebanon
THE country continues to be plagued with several and seemingly succeeding disasters. After the rampage of typhoons sometime in July comes the heightened activity of Mayon and a number of other previously dormant volcanoes that continue to threaten people’s lives and properties. Most recent in this chain of catastrophes and one that has inflicted extensive damage to the environment and livelihood of people in the area is the oil spill that devastated the coastal waters of Guimaras Islands last August 11.

The fragility of land titles
OF all official documents, birth certificates, marriage contracts, drivers’ licenses and even the lowly residence certificates, the least respected is the land title.

A joint disease
URIC acid, one of the body’s waste products, normally passes out through the kidneys in your urine. If there is more of it than the kidneys can process, gout is a likely outcome.

Oil spill
THE tanker that is now lying in up to 3,000 feet of water off Guimaras is a "ticking time bomb" according to Von Hernandez, Greenpeace campaign director for Southeast Asia. Considered as the country’s worst oil disaster, the spill had already affected 220 kilometers of coastline, 20 coastal barangays, and threatens three marine resources in the Visayas as well as the livelihood of 6,000 people, mostly dependent on fishing. Greenpeace and several senators have called on Petron which had chartered the tanker, Solar I accountable and should help clean up the mess. Petron has responded by asking Singapore to provide equipment which would suck the slick which is now spreading to other provinces. But this is out of a moral responsibility, and not a legal one, says Petron.

Continuity
CONTINUITY is a boon for good policies and administrations but a disaster when for the bad.

Unwanted cultures spreading
PRESIDENT GMA has called anew for a reconciliation with political enemies, airing fresh hopes for uniting the nation.
