HOST LA Salle-Health and Science Campus and Philippine Christian University-Dasmarinas outwitted their separate opponents in the finals to clinch the women’s and men’s chess titles of the 7th Southern Luzon Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SLCUAA) at the Palaruang La Salle recently.
The La Salle Lady Crusaders banked on the brilliance of Jordana Culanculan and Sharmae Callanta to capture the women’s diadem of this this 11-member league featuring the top schools of Southern Luzon.
Culanculan fashioned out a 42-move Sicilian victory over STI-Sta. Rosa’s Mara Joy Baltazar in Board 1 while Callanta whipped Maria Rachele Muyano in 45 moves of a Karo Cann in Board 2 to clinch for La Salle the women’s chess plum.
Perpetual Help-Molino, which was composed of chessers Carol Mae Osia and Erika Oconer, settled for third.
In men’s play, Arman Subaste and Freddie Dabu bagged PCU-Dasma the chess championship following masterful wins over Joseph Velasco and Jose Celmar of Perpetual Help-Molino in Boards 1 and 2, respectively. Glenbert Alimorom and Rolandson Picardal of STI-Sta. Rosa finished third.
St. Francis of Assisi-Bacoor once again showed its strength in the high school division by topping the chess competition for boys.
