Rudy de Leon: The archetype of a master photographer Perhaps every prestigious club or organization wherein competition serves as groundwork of legacy comes with a talent that wins the most marbles. In basketball, local legends Ramon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio tied for the most PBA MVPs with four each, while NBA’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won it six times.
SHOOTING FISH WITH A CAMERA IS EASY! Many folks believe that shooting underwater requires expensive equipment and lots of training. This is not true. What you really need is patience, good diving skills, the ability to obtain good neutral buoyancy, and a basic understanding of how light behaves underwater. I remember, when I first started taking underwater pictures, my instructor told me to always remember that light does not travel well underwater and that a flash was essential to good color. He also told me to remember to use the length of my arm as a gauge for determining how far I could shoot and get a clear picture. So let’s tackle these points:
A handy camera in the NOKIA N80 It was bound to happen sooner or later. This column reviewing phone cameras, that is. Indeed, the quality of cameras on cellphones has improved a lot since their first appearance in the market. Also, cameras are fast becoming a standard feature among the newer phone models. Bern Mejias A six-footer is no ordinary being in this country of not-so-tall people; more so when he is in photography where height doesn’t matter. Thus, it is no surprise that lensman Bern Mejias is fondly dubbed as a ‘gentle giant’ by his colleagues, a rare find and someone very remarkable.
Recreating old photographs One of the things that you can do with Photoshop is simulating old photographs—manipulating a recent photograph to look as if it was taken for example in the early ’90s. Of course not all subjects can be turned into an old photograph. Recently I took a photograph of a Balinese dancer. In Bali, most of the people still dress the way they did in the early century. Hence, it is perfect for this kind of project.
Photography and the community The recent oil spill in Guimaras reminded me of the themes adopted by FOTOFEST 2006 in Houston, Texas last April-May, 2006: The Earth – Artists Responding to Violence. For more than a month, The Eleventh International Biennial of Photography and Photo-related Art held over 120 exhibitions of photographic artworks on these topics in museums and non-traditional gallery spaces all over the city. The two themes, declared the organizers, were separate yet connected.
Laguna de Bay Loop Photo Shooting Tour At 6:00 a.m., three bus loads of photographers left the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation meeting grounds at Comfoods on Buendia corner Pasong Tamo. I could not imagine the photographers’ faces this early. Yawning? Eyes half closed? Snoring still?
Anvaya Cove Garish streetlights made of tall cement posts and amber lighting will not have a place in Anvaya Cove, Ayala Land Premier’s seaside leisure community in Morong, Bataan. Instead, bollards or low traffic posts with more subtle lighting will illuminate the path for evening strollers and drivers in this 320-hectare development.
