SMCL Alumni Association installs 7th president

Officials and employees of the Saint Michael’s College of Laguna celebrated the school's 31st anniversary at the Grand Ballroom of the Palms Country Club in Filinvest Alabang in Muntinlupa City.

Highlighting the affair was the launching of the College’s Practical Nursing Program by Commissioner Nona Ricafort of the Commission on Higher Education.

Another highlight of the event was the induction of the president of the SMCL Alumni Association, Anthony Almeda, who had Henry Sy Jr. of the SM Group of Companies as inducting officer.

Almeda, a member of Batch ’84 of Bachelor of Science major in Commerce, is currently the chairman and CEO of Al Almeda Land Inc., a family corporation. Almeda is also the CEO of Landvision Corporation, a real estate brokerage firm that specializes in industrial and commercial sites, the director and executive vice president of E-net Corporation, an Internet Service Provider, and the director and executive vice president of Terra Firma Resources Corporation, a business process outsource company handling the Citibank Credit Card Account for Laguna area. He is the 3rd vice president and secretary of Biñan Lions Club for 2006-2007 and a member of Biñan Los Manduros Club.

In her speech, Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese, College president said: "The accomplishments that we had after three decades of the college’s existence should serve as very strong motivation for us to continue on our mission towards our vision for the future. We owe it to ourselves and to the public. We should ride the winds of change and turn every opportunity for the College to bring forth, its ideal of service, moral uprightness, commitment to excellence and love for humanity."

The week-long celebration (Aug.19-25) opened with a motorcade dubbed as Car-At-Van para sa Kapayapaan on the major thoroughfares of Sta. Rosa, Biñan, Cabuyao, and San Pedro in Laguna and Carmona in Cavite.

On the second day, a Eucharistic celebration was held at Bridgeway, SM Megamall, Live@Studio 23 with the members of SMCL Family in attendance.

An "open house," which was also held on the third day with the theme "SMCL@ its Fairest," saw the launching of Saint Michael’s College of Laguna as the Home of the Amazing Angels". Other day’s events included the re-launching of the SMCL Website, www.smcl.edu.ph and opening of exhibits with Dr. Isabel Inlayo, CHED HERO IV-A director doing the ceremonial click and the Pearl Parade showcasing the record breaking ‘longest diploma’ called "antaling," a local rice concoction wrapped in banana leaf like a diploma.

On the fourth day, an Academic Paper Presentation was held during the gathering with the College Collaborators under the theme "Riding the Winds of change" with Dr. Conchita L. Manabat, the Chairperson of C.L Manabat & Co. as presentor. The ceremonies for the 4th Pura Limaco Awards followed with the recognition of outstanding men/women achievers of Biñan.

Honorees were Justice Norberto Yatco Geraldez, Junior Member, 3rd Division-Sandigan Bayan; Dr. Divina Lourdes ReyesReyes, member, Board of Optometry, Professional Regulation Commission; Ms. Victoria Potenciano Vergel De Dios, Governor, Zonta International District 17 and administrator, Victor R. Potenciano Medical Center; Dr. Emmanuel Yatco Jimenez, Research Director, Human Development for East Asia & Pacific Regions, World Bank; Dr. Conchita L. Manabat, Chairperson, C.L. Manabat & Co., (Youth Category) C.J. Muere, starstruch survivor, and Kirstie Elaine Alora, SEA Games Taekwondo gold medalist.
