Michelle Yeoh brings glad tidings for the holidays
AFTER their previous pairings ranging from New York Yankee centerfielder Johnny Damon to Michael Schumacher, the Holiday Heroes with Michelle Yeoh campaign just comes as a surprise. Then again, when you have collaborators and endorsers that range from Jil Sander to Japanese designer Yasuhiro Mihara to the worldwide network of female DJs, Shejay, to Philippe Starck to Alexander McQueen, the only expectation you can have of the Puma brand by now is that, well, it will surprise.
There is, however, one identifiable single message that this seeming hodgepodge of names does make—that of stylishness, performance, and innovation. And, now, with Michelle Yeoh at the end of it, it is a message that ends on an exclamation.
With a sizeable fan base—which is probably the other common denominator with all of Puma’s associations—and the athletic credibility to boot, Michelle Yeoh inspires a fun, dynamic Christmas campaign that includes a martial arts online game and a slew of kick-ass commercials against the backdrop of a dream-like, white Christmas scene, all in promotion of the very sleek and stylish Holiday Heroes collection that includes footwear gems like the Barbarella, the Textured Boot, and, of course, the Puma fashion staple, the Clyde.
A comfortable, lightweight slip-on, the Barbarella was originally designed for dance performance, but, especially in its popular pale gold shade, is also now pretty much a fashionable accent for street wear. On the other hand, a perfect fit with the now hugely popular skinnies, leggings or yoga wear is the Textured Boot, which consists of a removable insulated wrap in a cozy, slip-on style, designed to be elastic for a custom fit. Finally, since being the favorite of style-conscious b-boys, the Clyde, the iconic non-canvas basketball shoe named after New York Knicks legend Walt Frazier, has come a long way in reinventing itself as a fashion staple. This season, it comes in colored suede, in fall/winter combinations like burnt olive and green-white.
Apart from the Holiday Heroes collection, Puma’s offerings for the season also include newer designs of tees and shorts with Unique Sports Performance (USP) technology, which combines moisture and odor management. On the other hand, highlights for gold buffs are the golf tees with graphic print and knitted V-necks for men, and the comfy culottes, slim pants and the golf shoes in salmon and white leather for women. Finally, capping of the season are suede reporter bags with canvas lining and the Puma signature formstripe in front, Break Flight bags with detachable metal chains, and the very chic Spirit handbag in a vibrant Oriental red shade.
