Fighting global hunger: A call for a shift in global development models
MORE than a decade ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) called on the world’s leaders to work towards an ambitious goal – to halve by 2015 the 1992 levels of world hunger. Last month, FAO reported that there has not been much progress towards the target. Worldwide, more than 850 million people, close to half of the world’s population, do not have enough to eat. Too many, particularly children, die from hunger.

Speaking Out
CHARTER change remains one of the administration’s key permanent agenda that has acquired a life of its own in the national consciousness. This administration will pursue the high cause because it is the right thing to do for the public interest as it will do away with a degenerated system and help build a new Philippines.

99th Foundation Anniversary of the Philippine Columbian Association
FOUNDED in December, 1907, by a group of Filipino students who had just returned from the United States after completing their studies, the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) celebrates today its 99th Foundation Anniversary. As one of the earliest exclusive membership clubs in the country, which remains the only one of its kind in Manila, the club is named after the school where they studied – Columbian University.

Business Beat
AS our legislators hasten to put in place a system of government which the majority consider essential for the progress and development of the country, I hope they will also with greater speed act on pending economic bills which will have an immediate impact on improving the financial system’s ability to generate investments and savings. The poverty and the hunger that beset a good number of the Filipino people will be greatly alleviated by the jobs that capital market reforms will create through encouragement of more funds to flow as well as the protection and prudent use of these funds.

Second Thoughts
PARIS – UNESCO’s Colloquium on Research and Higher Education Policy in Paris last week posed a provocative thesis: "Universities as Centers of Research and Knowledge Creation: An Endangered Species."

All Things Considered
HE called it as he saw it. In effect, the judge was being compared as an umpire by Fr. James Reuter, spiritual adviser of Lance Corporal Daniel Smith, who said, "The decision was honest in the sense that Judge (Benjamin) Pozon declared what he saw and heard but it does not reflect the reality that Smith is not guilty."

Multi-sectoral coalition
CITY road maps are not — and should not — remain pipe dreams. They are not mere statements of aspirations. They have to be a blueprint for action. They provide a systematic guide for initiatives and undertakings of public officials and ordinary citizens, working in concert for making their city a dream city.

Boils down to face-saving now
AS early as Friday, the grapevine reported that President Arroyo wanted Congress to do away its version of a Constituent Assembly.

House Resolution No. 197
LET it be said that administration congressmen really gave their best when they were able to stifle the seemingly rabble-rousing opposition lawmakers and went ahead in approving, in a vote of 193 to 25, House Resolution No. 197 early morning of Thursday, December 7.

Fighting poverty
YESTERDAY was Human Rights Day, the theme for which was "Fighting Poverty, A Matter of Obligation Not Charity." It’s not as radical as George Bernard Shaw’s famous view of poverty as the true immorality. But it helps that the UN and, presumably, the Rich (nations and people) recognize that the eradication of poverty is an unending human quest.

SPEAKER Joe de Venecia has called for a Constitutional convention to amend or revise the Constitution to pave the way for a parliamentary government.
