Finding appropriate clothes to wear at a wedding need not be a challenge. With a little help from About Weddings, we tell you where to find the right outfit for the right wedding.

Garden weddings are naturally colorful and quaint like a watercolor landscape.

Dress yourself up in brightly-colored dresses that are made of light fabrics. Long dresses can easily transition from a day garden wedding into the evening reception. Light-colored suits in toffee and beige and pastel shirts like pink, baby blue and lavender evoke an English feel for men attending, making them look fresh masculine without the heaviness of a dark suit.

Beach Weddings are laidback and carefree.

The backdrop is the bright sunlight amidst the rippling blues and greens of the ocean. Take a page out of Brigitte Bardot’s beach chic look and try on a sexy cotton pantsuit with a contrasting scarf on the hair to match. Sand and high heels don’t match, but if you must insist, a pair of wedges will not only look great and won’t sink or trip you. The men can still look dressy and cool in white denim or linen pants with a loose button down shirt made of fabrics like linen or cotton. Use footwear that won’t be ruined by the salty sea and sand.

Attending a Chinese Wedding

While Chinese weddings usually require a formal dress, there are certain colors that are to be avoided as they mean bad luck in Chinese customs and traditions. As a guest in a Chinese wedding, one must respect their customs so as not to offend or create a bad atmosphere during the ceremony. Avoid colors like deep purple (and its varying shades), black and white. Bright colors like red, pink, orange or yellow bring good luck to the couple and are encouraged.

Guest Advice

- Underdressed is better than overdressed. You wouldn’t want to upstage the bride on her wedding day, would you?

- Dressing up is respectful, a messed-up look is just plain rude.

- Theme weddings are fun, but thinking of what to wear can be stressful. Don’t go overboard. A fairytale themed-wedding for example doesn’t mean you turning up in a gauzy dress with matching wings and pointed ears. Instead, find the key element that epitomizes the fairy tale feel and incorporate that into your outfit. Weave flowers into your hairstyle and add a little ethereal sparkle to your eyes using iridescent eyeshadow. It’s simple but in keeping with the theme without breaking the bank.

Makeup

- Match the face to the outfit. A heavily made-up face is not invited to a day wedding.

- Keep your makeup appropriate to what you’re wearing. For day weddings, a fresh, clean look will make you look young and radiant.

- Focus on bright blush and glossy lips while keeping the eyes well-defined and light.

- For evening weddings, you can deepen the eye color and use a stronger lip color. Keep the blush tame and use highlighter instead to strike a balance between the strong eyes and lips

All About Men:

Men have it easy. Formal wear for men is usually goof-proof, but if you’re still unsure, here are a few suggestions:

- For day weddings, a light colored suit works best. Light-colored suits usually go with dark brown shoes. Light shirts also are best for the day as overly dark outfits in the day look too Mafia mobster.

- For evening weddings, bring out your spiffy dark suit and wear black formal shoes. Formal shoes are leather and suede, preferably with a tapered tip. Anything too wide and boxy is meant for casual wear.

- In our tropical country, the barong is man’s best friend. Made of breathable indigenous fabrics, these Pinoy suits come in various styles that fit your personality. Unless the barong is black, do not wear dark shirts underneath.

Help for the Panicked Guest:

- If you’re one of those who run around the mall like a headless chicken looking for outfits, stop panicking. Rustan’s Personal Shopping service (available at all Rustan’s branches) was made for shoppers just like you. Ferdie Salvador enthuses that they offer a complete styling service where all you have to do is tell them what you want and they’ll do everything for you, from picking clothes right down to the tiniest accessories to complete your ensemble. They’ll even work around your budget and they can check out your closet and see what you need to update. It’s foolproof and absolutely stress-free.

- Need theme makeup or just makeup? Ix-Chel’s team of hair and makeup artists can create a look for you depending on what the wedding calls for.
