Support from the Asian Development Bank
IN view of gains posted by the Philippine economy, especially due to the government’s fiscal policies, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headed by its Chairman and President Haruhiko Kuroda has committed to increase these gains by way of two loan programs for the Philippine Power Sector Development Program and the Financial Market Regulation and Intermediation Program. The loan package totals US$ 650 million.

What’s a Con-con?
FROM experience, a constitutional convention or Con-con is a super political body called by Congress and the people, who elect delegates to draft, amend or revise a Constitution.

The people speak
THE national dilemma over the 1987 Constitution and the country’s continued prosperity, from 2007 onwards, continues to hog the airwaves and cut into premium front page lineage.

Malaysia’s Penang State: Richest but a headache
PENANG, Malaysia — Malaysia’s only ethnic Chinese chief minister has a political headache -- the state he governs is too much of an economic success.

Jesus’ testimony to John
Matthew 11:11-15

Keep planting the seeds of hope
IT is amazing how much we have conditioned ourselves for near-despair. We never stop blaming ourselves for our many woes. We even seem to take it as a matter of course to keep counting them and pointing our fingers to them. We can never talk enough about them: There is so much wrong in our society, and we are more than open about them. As we keep going on this course, perhaps even without realizing it, we have been spreading despair; and short of hope, many of our people are leaving our country every day.

ASEAN’s father
ASEAN’s father was rumored to be a "paper tiger" by the name of SEATO, a fact of life that has cast doubts on its pedigree. SEATO, in case you have not heard, was the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization established in 1954, while the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was born in 1967. The 12th ASEAN Summit was supposed to have been held in Cebu a few days ago but was abruptly cancelled due to typhoon "Seniang." Out of the eight SEATO members, only three were Asian countries – Filipinas, Pakistan and Thailand. The other five were the USA, Great Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand. That was how we were during the Cold War.

Voices of dissent
FROM what we see, it is clear many of our leaders are unprepared for the level of learning required by the role they play in national affairs.

MVCM
THERE’s no doubt now that my good friend Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez is the President’s "most valuable Cabinet member.

Tough act to follow
I AM tongue-tied, dumbstruck. I can only say, that Christmas concert that starred Otoniel Gonzaga supported by a top-heavy cast of two sopranos, a Dulce, a flutist, an orchestra and its conductor should have been watched by 10,000 or 20,000 more people at the Philamlife auditorium.
