International Human Solidarity Day
THE promotion of the culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing is vital in combating poverty. Thus the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 20 of each year as International Human Solidarity Day. Solidarity has defined the work of the United Nations since its birth and its creation drew the peoples of the world together to promote peace, human rights, and social and economic development.

Respect for human rights
RESPECT for human rights is a fundamental principle on which the existence of civilized society is premised. And this is the cornerstone of a democracy. This is the moral responsibility of any government.

The lost garden of the Constitution
AMIDST the declaration of administration congressmen that it has foregone of all efforts to push for the short-lived House Resolution 1450 (the resolution that sought to convene Congress into a Constituent Assembly to propose for amendments to the 1987 Constitution), and despite the Palace’s declaration that the ConAss proposal shall be set aside for more urgent national concerns, members of the opposition and other militant groups remain ever vocal of their disapproval of amending the Constitution – both in media and on the streets.

All Things Considered
THERE are some things about Chief Justice Reynato Puno that not many people are aware of. This is even aside from the fact that he holds the record for being the youngest justice to be appointed to the Court of Appeals at merely 40 years old, and for being for a long time, the youngest justice to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

On Bersamin slaying, prayer rally
CHURCHES are not safe anymore. The killing of Abra Congressman Luis Bersamin at 5:30 p.m. on December 15, dramatically proves this.

Need a change? Bishops can start with election
CHARACTER change, not Charter change.

Stretch mark
WHEN a person grows or gains weight really quickly, that person may get fine lines on the body called stretch marks. Stretch marks happen when the tissue under the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching. Although the skin is usually fairly elastic, when it’s overstretched, the normal production of collagen (the major protein that makes up the connective tissue in your skin) is disrupted. As a result, scars called stretch marks may form.

Our Filipino heroines
AS we look back to the past year, what stands out above all others are the man-made and natural disasters – political bickering, human rights abuses, brazen killing of journalists and activists, and of course the typhoons and landslides that have caused the loss of thousands of lives. But there had been some bright spots too. Among these are our good fortune in the two B’s – billiards and boxing. These had brought honor to the country with Efren "Bata" Reyes, world champion, and recently Ronnie Alcano, and of course boxing, with acclaimed "king" Manny Pacquiao. Four others brought home "golds" – two in boxing and one in billiards from the recent 15th Asian games at Doha.

Character(s) change
It should be borne in mind that there is nothing more difficult to arrange, more doubtful of success and more dangerous to carry through than initiating changes in a state’s constitution. —Machiavelli

Palace cold to Concon, too?
THE Church calls for moral renewal after Charter change attempt fouls up.
